Pudao Wines is expanding from the Chinese mainland by launching its retail business in Hong Kong, and wants to put a strong focus on quality wines 'beyond Bordeaux'.
Pudao, which is a subsidiary of wine distributor Summergate, is launching its online retail business, pudaowines.com, in Hong Kong. It is also set to open an office in the market to advise private customers on building a cellar.
'We feel that there is a growing sophistication in the Greater China market, with Hong Kong of course being the epicentre,' Pudao's general manager, Marcus Ford, told Decanterchina.com.
The move comes as Summergate seeks outside investment to fund its own growth strategy, but Ford said Pudao's move into Hong Kong is a separate project that has been 'in the plans and on the books for two years'.
While there will be a solid amount of Bordeaux on sale, Ford said Pudao is keen to offer a broad range to reflect the increasingly eclectic tastes of consumers.
'We think it’s an important time to be shining a spotlight on high quality wines beyond Bordeaux,' Ford said. He added that listings will include a mixture of 'everyday' drinking wines alongside those from higher-end producers across the New and Old Worlds, such as California's Ridge, South Australia's Clarendon Hills, Italy's Ricasoli and Hugel from Alsace, France.
