Marks & Spencer expands online wine sales in China

By

British multinational retailer Marks & Spencer (M&S) has launched a new online wine store on JD.com, one of China’s largest e-commerce platforms.

M&S said wines on its new e-shop in China will include classic Old World regions like Bordeaux and Rioja, as well as New World wines from Australia, New Zealand and the US.

According to Vinexpo, online wine sales in China reached CNY7.3bn (US$1.12bn) in 2013, doubled the amount of 2012.

‘I hope the breadth of our range will give Chinese wine enthusiasts an opportunity to discover new wine styles and origins that they may not have tasted before.’ Emma Dawson, wine buyer at M&S, told DecanterChina.com.

In January 2013, the group launched its first flagship online store in China on TMall.com, another Chinese online platform.

According to M&S, its wine sales in China grew by 12% in 2013.

A spokesperson for the retailer declined to give specific sales targets for the new store on JD.com.

‘Our new site complements our online store on TMall and helps us to reach more customers across China,’ she said. She highlighted the ‘order in the morning and receive in the afternoon’ delivery service offered by JD.com as something the firm wants to capitalise on.

M&S started operations in China in 2008 and has 15 stores across the country, alongside its online presence.
