Two wines from a Beijing-based winery were chosen to pair with Chinese cuisine for the G20 opening banquet in Hangzhou, China.
China’s president, Xi Jinping, greeted world leaders at the G20 summit with a banquet of local cuisine and Chinese wines, local media reported.
A Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 and a Chardonnay 2012 from the Beijing-based Chateau Changyu AFIP Global were the wines paired with the traditional Hangzhou cuisine.
‘Sweet and sour mandarin fish’ and ‘orange-flavoured crab meat’ were among the traditional Hangzhou dishes served at the banquet. See the full menu below.
China has made a tradition of serving Chinese wines to international guests at state banquets.
At the end of his opening speech, President Xi proposed a toast to his guests with a glass of red wine.
Champagne or another sparkling wine is often used to toast in the West, but red wine has a strong symbolic significance in China. Red is commonly associated with fortune and joy in the traditional Chinese culture.
Chateau Changyu AFIP Global was established in 2007.
With its proximity to Beijing, wines produced from this winery have been served at many of China’s state banquets, including US president Obama’s first state visit in 2009, according to Changyu.
Last year, a Chardonnay from the same chateau was used at the opening banquet for the state visit of German chancellor Angela Merkel.
Established in 1892, Changyu is China’s biggest wine producing company. Chateau Changyu AFIP Global is one of the five estates it owns in China.
