Countdown to Shanghai: Q&A with Angelo Gaja

By

Decanter talks exclusively to Angelo Gaja, one of Italy's most iconic producers, about his involvement in the first Decanter Shanghai Fine Wine Encounter, which takes place at The Ritz Carlton in Shanghai on Saturday 29th November.

When did you first visit Shanghai?

It was in the 90s. I fell in love with the city immediately and it still continues to fascinate me.

What do you most love about it?

The energy and the dynamism because it’s always changing. That’s very stimulating and refreshing.

What is your favourite part of the city?

The historical French concession and the Bund are both very charming. But also the Pudong area for showing how modern and contemporary Shanghai is.

Which are your top three restaurants there?

Otto e Mezzo does very good Italian food. I also like the Chinese restaurant at the Peninsula Hotel. And our Chinese partner ASC has its Wine Residence where the food is always excellent.

How would you describe the fine wine culture in Shanghai?

Very sophisticated and cosmopolitan. People in Shanghai are always eager to discover quality products, especially great authentic, artisanal wines. I’ve met several wine lovers whose collections amaze me. They are also very enthusiastic towards Gaja, which makes me very proud.

You have an amazing list of wines that you are showing at your masterclass. Which ones are they?

Yes, it’s going to be fun. I’ve chosen wines from both Tuscany and Piedmont. So they include CA’MARCANDA 2010 from Bolgheri and RENNINA 2004 Brunello di Montalcino DOCG from our Pieve S. Restituta winery. Our Piedmontese wines include SORI’ TILDIN 2005, BARABARESCO 2011 and 1997, SPERSS 1999, DARMAGI 1988 and the GAIA & REY 2005 all from the Gaja winery.

Angelo Gaja will be presenting a special personal tasting at the Decanter Shanghai Fine Wine Encounter on Saturday 29th of November.
