The three-year programme will give students the opportunity to study in both China and New Zealand, spending the first year and a half in Yantai, Shandong Province, learning English and basic wine knowledge.

Students who reach the required level of English will then continue on to complete the course at NMIT with a Bachelor’s degree granted by the New Zealand institute.

‘We believe in internationalisation – and that’s really important,’ said Tony Gray, chief executive of NMIT. ‘This is not just about numbers. It’s about making sure that the sort of students we recruit and the organisations we partner with are relevant to the region and that we’re providing a global set of outcomes for students.’

According to the prospectus, the course will follow the curriculum and assessment system of NMIT and the degree will be approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education, which will be an advantage for graduates who want to develop their career in China after studying abroad.

This type of partnership with foreign institutions is not brand-new for Chinese universities.

China Agriculture University’s Yantai Campus has also had a partnership with the Institut des Sciences de la Nature et de l'Agroalimentaire de Bordeaux (ISNAB) to deliver wine-related undergraduate courses via ISNAB (China) since 2009.

Similarly, the College of Enology, Northwest A&F University has a sommelier training programme with French organisation CAFA Formations, consisting of one year study in China and two years overseas in France.
