Decanter star buys of 2015 - Australia
Wines
Vasse Felix, Heytesbury Chardonnay, Margaret River, Australia 2013
Wonderfully complex, swirling aromas of fresh dough, roasted nuts, and bubbling butter. Fruit is ripe with rich lemon curd character; oak complexes and balances sweetness. Racy and elegant, and beautifully harmonious; a stunning and refined Chardonnay in a modern style.
Pewsey Vale, The Contours Museum Reserve Riesling, Eden Valley, Australia 2009
Glorious smoky notes of ageing Riesling with baked apple and roasted lime. Pure and precise with an oily texture and succulence. Really long and stylish, mineral, with a dynamic style. Has a sense of nobility to it.
Cullen, Diana Madeline, Margaret River, Australia 2012
Ripe, modern style of Cabernet with balsa hints, pencil shavings and solid fruit. Very well made, pleasant to drink, but could use some more time to fully express itself.
Leeuwin Estate, Art Series Chardonnay, Margaret River, Australia 2012
Honeyed melon aromas with hints of cream and warm butter. Big and bold with refined acidity and a soft, creamy texture. Quite voluptuous, pure, and complex. A vivid wine, a pretty benchmark.
Yalumba, The Virgilius Viognier, Eden Valley, South Australia, Australia 2012
Lovely, expressive honeysuckle and apricot rind aromas with some clever, nutty oaking. Polished and velvety with elegance and great roundness. A classic, very successful Viognier; heart-warming.
