New plantings in cooler-climate regions and changes in the vineyard and cellar have led to a rise in quality, diversity of styles and varietal expression, says Anthony Rose.

Still quite a lot of oak in evidence here, but some lovely forest fruit flavours tucked away in the background supported by stocky tannins.
This is starting to develop some truffle complexity and sweet pepper spice, where the fruit is starting to turn savoury and the alcohol is quite hefty.
A wine that is reminiscent of smoky old fashioned cigar bars; powerful oak influence and rich red fruits give a full but slightly bitter mouthfeel.
Bright bell pepper mixes with oozing blueberries and an unusual vegetable liqueur quality. It delivers a big package but the alcohol is evident.
A straightforward, ripe, juicy style that is absolutely representative of fruit-driven Shiraz. Made to please, this is supple and bright.
The nose gives a kirsch-like impression and the palate has well-judged tannin and a savoury bite. Regional identity is faint but it is nonetheless approachable.
Fulsome fruit lie under a layer of dusty oak and sweet mint. The alcohol feels hot and the acidity tart, but there is typical textural richness to it.
Notes of hibiscus dominate on the nose, with a sweet molasses undertone. This wine is velvety and lingering, if a touch over-extracted.
