Wines
M. Chapoutier, Les Bécasses, Côte-Rôtie, Northern Rhone, France 2012
(Sold at online shops)
Smoked, bacon and dark berry brooding on the nose. Sweet blackberry fruit palate that is full-bodied and fleshy but needs more structure.
Domaine Georges Vernay, Blonde du Seigneur, Côte-Rôtie, Northern Rhone, France 2012
Juniper, rose and pink peppercorn. The attack is on the sweet side with plushness at its centre. The tannins add direction. Genuine Côte-Rôtie.
M. Chapoutier, La Mordorée, Côte-Rôtie, Northern Rhone, France 2012
(Sold at online shops)
Violet perfumed first aroma, and a note of prune depth. Lots of fruit, and plenty of soft tannin, with good structure and long finish.
Paul Jaboulet Aîné, Domaine des Pierrelles, Côte-Rôtie, Northern Rhone, France 2012
Appealing bouquet reflecting berries, smoke, and buffed leather. Good weight of fruit, with ripe tannin good concentration of red cherry fruit in the mid-palate and refreshing acidity. Well made, enjoyable, serious wine.
E. Guigal, Brune et Blonde, Côte-Rôtie, Northern Rhone, France 2011
Juniper, clove and some earthy, woodland, resinous aromas. The palate also carries the imprint of flowers, bright acid, good concentration, and smoky spices with a long finish. Juicy yet savoury and dry.
Yves Cuilleron, Bassenon, Côte-Rôtie, Northern Rhone, France 2012
(Chinese distributor information not yet available)
Smoky note to the red fruit; pepper and capsicum. A firm line of red fruit within. The palate continues the smoky, rocky fusion theme. Northern sector vibrancy here. Clipped tannins for now, a pumice stone effect, with a tiny note of flowers on the finish, which delivers complexity. Appeals to mind as well as palate. Has intrigue and reflects its terroir well. Lovely freshness and length.
